Homecoming '19

A campus-wide celebration!

Legacy of Lowell Service Day project

Homecoming week kicked off on Saturday, September 21, with the Legacy of Lowell Service Day project, hosted by the Salt Lake City Alumni Club and coordinated by the U’s Lowell Bennion Community Center. Alumni, family members, and students gathered at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni House volunteering more than 300 hours of service, resulting in: a tied quilt that will be donated to a homeless shelter, 12 knitted hats for babies in the U’s newborn ICU, and 500+ yards of “plarn” converted from plastic grocery bags, which will be crocheted into sleeping mats available to our homeless community. Read more about plarn and Bags to Beds—a non-profit organization founded by U alum Kaitlin McLean BS’19—which aims to reduce plastic waste while creating a resource for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Emeritus Reunion

On Tuesday, September 24, more than 100 alumni joined with U President Ruth Watkins and newly appointed head gymnastics coach Tom Farden at the Alumni House to mingle and reminisce during a cocktail hour. After a lovely dinner, guests were introduced to Ernie Rimer—director of Sport Science for U Athletics—who presented some of the significant results from implementation of new technologies aimed at maximizing overall health of student-athletes and minimizing injury.

Scholarship Scramble Golf Tournament

Bonneville Golf Course was the venue for Thursday’s Scholarship Golf Scramble. 100 alumni and fellow U fans joined in the friendly competition, enjoying a beautiful fall day while benefiting student scholarships. U Alumni thanks honorary chair Bob Young and President Ruth Watkins for their continued support of this scholarship fundraiser.

Scholarship 5K & Kids 1K

Attendance at the ever-popular U5K—our Homecoming Scholarship 5K & Kids 1K—rose to more than 1,200 participants on Saturday, September 28. The impending storm held off just long enough to award prizes to the fastest male and female runners in both the 5K and 1K, fastest corporate teams, and first place age division prizes. Click here to view race results. A scholarship was awarded to Alpha Beta Psi for the largest student group participating. Nearly 150 alumni living beyond the Wasatch Front participated in the Virtual 5K by running or walking a course in their local communities, while supporting student scholarships!

Alumni Tailgate

The weeklong festivities culminated on game day with a packed tailgate party prior to the rain-soaked 38-13 win over Washington State! Students and parents joined alumni at the annual pre-game celebration at Guardsman Way as part of Parent & Family Weekend. Guests enjoyed food, drink, prizes, and got to hear the Marching Utes play the fight song.

See you next year, at Homecoming ‘20!
