Alumni Scholarship FAQs

The Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Board of Governors create a task force of individuals who personally review every application and select recipients based on eligibility criteria, essays, and demonstrated need.

Student applying to either the Alumni Legacy scholarship or the Steve and Angie Smith Young Alumni scholarship must include the following with their application:

  • A current transcript
  • Name and email of a reference for a letter of recommendation
  • A one‐page resume
  • A one-page (double‐spaced) essay

Notification emails will be sent to each applicant’s university email address (uNID@utah.edu) approximately one month after the application deadline.

Application availability varies slightly each year but is usually open by mid-October the year prior to students’ first fall semesters.

Scholarship applications are submitted through the University’s Academic Works system. Students will click on the “Application” button on U Alumni’s scholarship web page and will need to sign in to Academic Works using their student uNID and password and complete a General Application before filling out specific alumni scholarship applications. Please do not submit applications to scholarships@alumni.utah.edu as they will not be accepted.

Students applying to the Steve and Angie Smith Young Alumni scholarship must demonstrate financial need and complete a FAFSA application prior to the scholarship deadline.

Application deadlines vary each year but are typically due between mid-February and early March.

Our email may have been sorted into your junk or spam folders. If it’s been longer than one month after the application deadlines and students don’t have an email in their uNID@utah.edu inbox, spam, or junk folders, you may call 801-581-6995 or email scholarships@utah.edu to confirm the notification emails have been sent and to request a new email if necessary.
