The MUSS

The MUSS is the University of Utah’s student fan club for all of the athletics teams on campus including football, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, and baseball. Currently, the Football MUSS is the only one with an official registration process.

History and Introduction

Established in 2002, The MUSS became the most popular student section in the Mountain West Conference and is now one of the most prominent in the Pac-12. Over the years, nearly 100,000 students have been members of The MUSS—joining together, cheering on their fellow students, and creating lifelong memories. In 2004, it was named one of the Top Five Student Sections in the country by ESPN, and the same honor was given in 2014 by NCAA.com. In 2021, The MUSS was recognized by ESPN as the Live Mas Student Section of the Year.

MUSS Seating

How seating works: All 5400 seats are assigned in the MUSS. We realize that students are not able to
attend every game even though they have tickets. Standing room seats are sold to be able to fill in any
of the open seats. Students have until kickoff to be in their assigned seats, after kickoff if a seat isn’t
filled a student with a standing room ticket may sit in the seat.

Before kickoff if you are in the incorrect seat, please move. If someone is in your assigned seat and will
not move, please find a stadium usher or text Fan up (69050) about the issue. We highly recommend
arriving to the stadium early. Anyone sitting in the incorrect seat before kickoff and refuses to move,
may lose their tickets for upcoming home games.

Lower 15 rows: With assigned seats, we do our best to assure that students are able to sit in their
assigned seat. One of the ways we try to help the lowest seats is to require a wristband in addition to
your MUSS lanyard for the first 15 rows in the MUSS. This helps security have one more way to verify
who should be in those seats.

Before each home game students will need to pick up a wristband for the game. We’ve arranged 3
different times and places to get a wristband. The current year’s lanyard is required in order to pick up
the wristband. Without the lanyard a wristband will not be given. Screenshots or photos will not work.

The pick-up options are:

At the ticket office (south west corner of Rice Eccles Stadium) the day before the home game the hours of 2-6 pm.
At the MUSS tailgate on Guardsman Way. The tailgate will start 2.5 hours before kickoff and end 1 hour before kickoff.
• At gate L as you enter the stadium. There will be a table off to the side just after entering the stadium. This option will only be available until kickoff.

To avoid lines, we highly recommend picking up a wristband at either the ticket office or the tailgate.

Without a wristband, students will not be able to access their seat in the lower bowl. Students will need both their lanyard and a wristband to sit in the lower 15 rows of the student section. We are not able to reprint or replace lanyards. If a lanyard is lost students will still be able to attend the
game but their ticket will then be a standing room ticket.

Standing room tickets: For various reasons, students aren’t able to attend every game. To make sure The
MUSS is full a limited number of standing room tickets are made available. Students with a standing
room ticket are encouraged to enter through portals 41 and 42 and make their way to the top of the
stadium. After kickoff, students with a standing room ticket may sit in any of the open seats in the
student section.

Code of conduct/stadium policies:

The MUSS, U Alumni, Utah Athletics, and the Office of the Dean of Students would like to remind you
that as a MUSS member, you agree to abide by all the rules and regulations of Rice-Eccles Stadium. This
includes the Fan Behavior Guidelines and the FanUP initiative. Additionally, as a student, you will be held
accountable to the Student Code of Rights & Responsibilities. You are expected to be aware of these
policies/regulations and behave accordingly.

The following behaviors will be cause for ejection from The MUSS and from Rice-Eccles Stadium:
1. Alcohol possession and/or public intoxication
2. Racial and derogatory comments directed at individuals or groups
3. Rude and disrespectful behavior
4. Throwing items
5. Overcrowding—your area will be given a warning, but if the overcrowding continues the entire row could be ejected
6. Vomiting
7. Smoking, vaping or chewing tobacco

All ejections will be made at the discretion of stadium security and University Police. If you are ejected
from the stadium, or if someone using your ticket is ejected, you will lose the privilege of attending the
next home football game. If ejected, you will also be referred to the Office of the Dean of Students for
possible violation of the Student Code. If you are found responsible for violating the Student Code, you
will be subject to behavioral sanctions which may include suspension from the university. Your actions
may also have criminal consequences (e.g. public intoxication, minor in possession, physical assault, etc.)
to be determined by law enforcement.

The MUSS section should be a loud and rowdy atmosphere, but not at the expense of anyone else’s
enjoyment. We encourage good sportsmanship and expect each student to be respectful and
considerate of the fans around them. We want to be very clear that profanity, public intoxication, rude
and disrespectful behavior, racial and derogatory comments or verbal attacks will not be tolerated. If
you see inappropriate behavior during the game, please text “FANUP” to 69050 and include a
description and location of the incident.

You are the most loyal and passionate fans—and the best student section in the nation—and we are
excited to join with you to cheer on our student-athletes throughout the year.

Student ticket policies:

  • Seating is based on priority number and is subject to change when priority number changes due to the addition of other group members (e.g., if someone in June joins a group in which most members joined in April, the priority number will be pushed back).
  • There are NO REFUNDS, and all sales are final.
  • Student tickets (and student guest tickets) are not transferrable.
  • All tickets are digital.
  • Students are responsible for the actions of anyone using their ticket to attend a game. Any consequences from a policy violation or ejection from the stadium will be enforced with the original ticket holder.
  • You will receive emails from The MUSS for as long as you are a MUSS member.
  • Failure to pick up your shirt by the SECOND HOME GAME, or another specified date determined by the MUSS Board and communicated to all MUSS members, will result in loss of your season tickets and ultimately loss of your MUSS membership.
  • Non-fee-paying students (such as those in Continuing Education) may be required to pay guest fees, depending on their enrollment status at the beginning of the football season.
  • By joining The MUSS you agree to abide by all policies and procedures set forth by The MUSS Board, Athletics and Rice-Eccles Stadium.
  • The MUSS Board of Directors reserves the right to terminate membership for inappropriate or disgraceful behavior.

MUSS Traditions

-3rd down jump—Have you ever wanted to see a living definition of The MUSS? All it takes is to look at the Utah student section in Rice-Eccles Stadium on an opponents 3rd down. It’s crazy! 7,000 students, raising their 3’s, and screaming at the top of their lungs is truly a sight to see.

-Tailgates—Before each home game, MUSS members get together for food and fun to get ready for the game. Music, games, and prizes are a great draw to help get students to the game early.

-MUSS Bus—As if sitting in the MUSS at a home game isn’t enough, MUSS members also have the opportunity to join the Utes on the road! For one road game a year, MUSS members hop on a bus and bring their energy and enthusiasm to an away game.

-Spring Flag Football—At the end of spring football practices before the annual spring game, MUSS members get their chance at the spotlight. Coached by members of the Utah Football staff, MUSS members play a fun flag football game in Rice-Eccles Stadium for bragging rights and great memories.
