International Alumni Events and Reunions

2016 European Reunion – Trier, Germany, and Luxembourg; May 14-15

In May, more than 40 alumni from Germany, Egypt, The Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, and the U.S. got together to celebrate the U’s 18th European Alumni Reunion. The events started in Trier, Germany, on Saturday, May 14. Alumni and their families met in the morning at Porta Nigra, the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site. Everyone enjoyed the walking tour of the city (“2000 steps-2000 years”) that included the famous Roman Imperial Baths. Twentieth-Year Anniversary – Germany, May 2014

U alum Esther Gloudemans (who co-organized the U's 2013 European Alumni Reunion, its 15th official get-together, with fellow alum Muriel van Alsté) sent us news and photos from a recent informal gathering of several U alumni in Europe. Twenty years after first meeting each other in Salt Lake City, we thought it was time for a reunion. We have kept in touch over the years, but never have been together as we were in our group in Utah. The group being Themis (Greece), Celine (France), Miranda, Hannie, Esther, Muriel (Netherlands), Lena (Sweden), Kathrin, Daniel, Heike (Germany) and Kozo (Japan), with all of our partners and kids. The group counts 16 children, ages between 3 and 12. We met in Germany, close to Nürnberg, in a big house that had room for all of us! We spent three days sharing memories, pictures, video (still on VHS!) and making new ones, especially with the kids, some of who speak no less than four languages, having such international parents. Our Utah group "delivered" three marriages (Kathrin and Daniel, both German; Heike and Kozo, German and Japanese; and Celine and Themis, French and Greek). And we remembered our dear friend Benjamin, who was killed in an airplane crash in 2009. We missed a few friends, mostly American and South American, for whom the trip was a bit too long for just three days. And we thank the U for not only bringing us together, but for remaining a binding factor in all of our lives! We are hoping to have our kids study in Salt Lake in a few years. U of U "the next generation"?

Nagoya Exchange Program Celebrates 50 Years, September 2013

The Nagoya Study Tour program celebrated its 50th anniversary with two events at the University of Utah in 2013.

A collaborative effort between the Nagoya Broadcasting Network (NBN) and the University of Utah, the exchange program brought more than 300 students from Nagoya, Japan, to Utah and the United States over the course of nearly 30 years, from 1963 to 1992. In July of this year, seven former exchange students from Nagoya came back to the U to reunite with members of their Salt Lake City host families and U employees who had helped with the program over the years. Several more former participants reunited for a celebration at the U in September. In addition to attending receptions in honor of the program, the former students also heard from U leaders, including U President David W. Pershing, as well as Fred Esplin MS’74, the U’s vice president for institutional advancement; Michael Hardman BS’71 MEd’73 PhD’75, the U’s chief global officer; John Ashton BS’66 JD’69, the Alumni Association’s executive director; and Nelly Divricean BS’09 MS’12, international alumni relations manager.
